A Thousand Lights

‘A Thousand Lights’

Out across a summer night,

a thousand city lights

blink.

Each tells a story

of minor moments —

the catastrophe of Chinese food arriving late,

a lonely night of Parcheesi,

headlights zooming,

romances blooming

and souring

over wine in cafes.

People come

and go,

and wait

and wish.

All the while, waves still lap at the shore,

palms watch from on high,

and the sun burns again into a lavender haze,

ready to rise tomorrow, as ever.
