How to Be Good

Phyllis Harris small girl.jpg

‘How to Be Good’

Lead the small child

to a roomful

of every toy she could imagine

and say, “It’s all yours.”

But she will look up

with big, unsure eyes

take only one doll

from the shelf

and sit

with hands folded:

“Thank you. That’s enough.”

We say this is good.

But good is:

fierce

deserving

unique

wild

weird

magical

too much

imperfect

gives no fucks

and is worthy

of the whole world.
